Michelle Williams reportedly had little confidence in the possibility of having a lasting romance with her ex-boyfriend Jason Segel.
The 32-year-old My Week with Marilyn actress and the 33-year-old How I Met Your Mother actor reportedly called off their romance recently.
It appeared that the pair were getting along famously as early as January, when they vacationed together in Mexico.
Jason is said to have been making a special effort to get to know Michelle’s daughter Matilda, whom she shares with late actor Heath Ledger.
Despite his efforts, Michelle simply didn’t have faith that their relationship would last.
"She cares a great deal for Jason but is not ready to make a commitment," a source told People magazine.
"Maybe if they were together day-to-day, she would have more confidence in a future. But not at this time."
The distance between them is rumoured to have been too much to bear for Michelle, who is based in New York City.
Apparently she simply didn’t believe that Jason would forfeit his life in Los Angeles in favour of creating a home in the Big Apple.
"Jason never got rid of his place in L.A., and Michelle's life with [daughter] Matilda was and has always been in New York," another insider revealed to the publication.
"While Jason made every effort to make them a priority in his life – and they were top priority – he still couldn't drop everything and leave his life and career in L.A."
Michelle and Jason began dating at the beginning of 2012.
They quietly ended their affair earlier this month.
Michelle is currently on tour promoting her fantasy film Oz The Great and Powerful. She portrays the good witch Glinda in the Wizard of Oz adaptation.
The newly-single star was all smiles when she appeared at the golden-carpeted premiere of Oz with co-stars Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz in London Thursday night.
The actress appeared morose on her trip to Russia earlier in the week, around the time news surfaced of her break-up.
