Winstone in Moonfleet adaptation

Ray Winstone is set to star in new Sky One drama series Moonfleet.

The channel announced Ray would take the lead role in their two-part series based on the John Meade Faulkner novel of the same name.

Ray said: "I'm incredibly excited to be working with Sky - I can't wait to start filming and it's a real honour to be bringing such an epic adventure story to life."

The series has been penned by Life On Mars writer Ashley Pharoah and will also star The White Queen actor Aneurin Barnard.

Ray will play Elzevir Block, the head of a gang of smugglers in 18th-century Dorset, which recruits John Trenchard (Aneurin) to go on a hunt for a lost diamond.

Also starring are Omid Djalili, Mad Dogs actor Ben Chaplin, The Inbetweeners' Martin Trenaman, Silent Witness's Lorcan Cranitch and Spooks' Anthony Ofoegbu.

Filming is due to begin in Dublin this summer and will air later in the year.
