Witherspoon: No parent is perfect
Reese Witherspoon thinks everyone has to make sacrifices that hurt the heart sometimes.
The Sweet Home Alabama actress has three children; daughter Ava, 15 and son Deacon, 12, from her first marriage to Ryan Phillippe, and son Tennessee, two, with husband Jim Toth. The 39-year-old juggles her work commitments with motherhood but admits she doesn’t always get it right.
“No one’s really doing it perfectly. I think you love your kids with your whole heart, and you do the best you possibly can,” she told Southern Living magazine. “But, you know, right now I’m feeling sad missing my little two-year-old, and my daughter’s about to finish her freshman year of high school, and my son has a golf tournament this weekend that I hope I don’t miss.”
Reese has had a brilliant career since starting out as a child actress, having starred in hit films including Legally Blonde, Wild and Walk the Line, for which she won an Academy Award in 2006. The star still loves making movies, recently moving into producing as well as acting, but at times it has come at the expense of her family.
“There are some sacrifices you make, and it hurts your heart sometimes, but my kids tell me they’re proud of what I’ve accomplished, and that just means everything,” she added. “I grew up with a working mom, and I have so much respect for the things she did as a nurse and a teacher. I would never begrudge her that.”
Reese was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and spent time in Germany as a child before moving to Nashville, Tennessee. She worried that her Southern twang would be a stumbling block when she started out as an actress but now, she embraces her accent.
“Early on, someone said, ‘Well, you’re never gonna get a job with an accent like that.’ I learned to change it up, but it’s like a pair of slippers that I put on when I’m at home. I start to talk more and more Southern,” she joked. “My kids know when I’m serious. I get really Southern.”
