James McAvoy is unveiled with the classic look of Professor X at the end of the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse.

The 36-year-old Scottish actor appears bald and in a wheelchair, evoking Sir Patrick Stewart who has played the older Professor X since X-Men kicked off the franchise in 2000.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set in 1983, 10 years after the events of X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

The trailer, which also includes a glimpse of the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Centre, promises another blockbusting entry in the series.

It opens with Jean Grey, portrayed by Game Of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, saying: "I saw the end of the world. I could feel all this death."

McAvoy's Professor X responds: "Jean, it was just a dream."

Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac), the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible.

"I've been called many things over many lifetimes: Ra, Krishna, Yahweh," he says in the trailer.

"You are all my children and you're lost because you follow blind leaders, but I am here now. I'm here for you," he adds as he recruits a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), among other mutants, to create a new world order.

Director Bryan Singer is once again at the helm as Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Professor X lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis.

The trailer depicts Professor X wearing the Cerebro helmet. "I've never felt power like this before," he says as his eyes go black.

Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Beast and the film will also see the return of Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Evan Peters as Quicksilver and Lucas Till as Havok.

In addition to Turner, newcomers include Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Lana Condor as Jubilee.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past is the most successful film in the franchise to date, making 750 million dollars at the worldwide box office.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27 2016.
