Zara Holland: 'Every woman has needs, I did nothing wrong'

Published 22/06/2016

Former Miss Great Britain Zara Holland has insisted she has done "nothing wrong" by having sex on ITV2 show Love Island, and says the decision to take her title because of it is "horrific".

Zara Holland insists she was never told by Miss Great Britain organisers that she was banned from having sex on Love Island.

The 20-year-old blonde was stripped of her title by pageant bosses after she slept with new boy Alex Bowen less than 24 hours after he entered the villa. In a statement the organisation said that Zara wasn't living up to what they expected of her as a positive role model to young women, and they added to The Sun newspaper that they had explicitly told her she shouldn't have sex on television. But Zara says they made no such stipulations.

"Miss Great Britain did not tell me I couldn’t have sex on the show," she told The Sun. "They gave a written letter of permission to say I could do Love Island and they haven’t spoken to me since, which I am very confused about. The only thing I have seen is a statement on Twitter."

Deone Johnson, who was the runner-up in the contest originally, is now the new Miss Great Britain. But Zara condemned the decision to take her crown after her intimate night in the Hideaway with Alex, deeming it "horrific".

"I am very disappointed. I put so much time and effort into the Miss GB brand. I sacrificed my work, my own personal savings, I worked my ass off," she continued.

"It was horrific to lose the Miss GB title. All the things Miss GB claims to stand for have been used against me.”

While Zara has maintained since her night of passion that it was "very out of character" for her, she insists she doesn't regret her actions. And while it was fuelled by alcohol, Zara says she was fully aware of what she was doing at all times.

"There is nothing wrong with having sex on TV," she said. "I knew what I was signing up for - it is Love Island. I am a 20-year-old girl who was in the moment.

"I forgot that the cameras were there. I don’t blame the alcohol though, I knew what I was doing, but it gave me confidence.

I had no doubts I wanted to stay overnight in the hideaway. If you have a one-night stand and wake up in the morning feeling happy, then that’s great. I mean, every girl has needs."
