One Direction star Zayn Malik has become engaged to his Little Mix singer girlfriend Perrie Edwards.

Zayn, 20, popped the question two years after they met backstage while contestants at ITV's The X Factor.

Perrie, who is also 20, was spotted wearing an engagement ring when she attended the premiere of the One Direction movie This Is Us in London's Leicester Square.

A spokesman confirmed: "Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private."

It is thought the couple became engaged over the weekend. The news will break the hearts of thousands of fans of the boy band, many of whom made a pilgrimage to Leicester Square to catch a glimpse of the group.

Zayn has worn his heart on his sleeve by having a cartoon version of his fiancee tattooed on his right bicep. In an interview this week had admitted: "She was a bit shocked at first but loves it now."

Perrie revealed at the premiere that they had decided to exclude their romance from the film, which follows the chart-topping boyband as they toured around the world.

"Our relationship is quite private but they are quite open with their fans and everybody watching, and what they wanted in the movie is what they have got. So it's an incredible movie," she said.

"It's amazing. It's really, really good. It's all about what they do, how hard they work and how much fun they have on the road," she added.

Perrie was joined by her bandmates Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock on the red carpet. Leigh-Anne hinted that she would like to see a Little Mix film in the future, adding: "We hope this will be us in a couple of years' time!"

One Direction: This Is Us, directed by Super Size Me filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, will open in cinemas on August 29.
