Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have not discussed a divorce, insist sources close to the couple.
It was recently claimed by a US magazine that the Welsh actress was set to split from her husband Michael Douglas in a “$300m divorce battle”. However, sources close to the couple insist they have not discussed ending their marriage.
“Divorce would be the final straw,” a source told British magazine Grazia. “It would be too damaging for the children and a strain on both of them emotionally and health wise.”
It seems the split speculation has surfaced because the stars have been spending time apart recently.
Michael is living in Manhattan, while Catherine is based at their $4m home in New York State with their two children Dylan, 13, and Carys, ten.
“It’s no secret to friends and family that they spend so much time apart. Michael prefers city life whereas Catherine feels New York doesn’t give her space to breathe,” a source revealed. “They need to make more of an effort with their marriage. It’s not enough to be seen together for public appearances – they have to do more behind the scenes.”
It has been claimed that 68-year-old Michael visits Catherine and their kids at weekends.
The Oscar-winning actress has made no secret that she misses spending time as a family.
At a recent premiere for Red 2, the brunette explained that her husband was busy with work commitments and her children had also been away from home over the summer.
"Michael's doing a movie on the East Coast with Diane Keaton, so he's working," she told ET Online. "My children are actually at sleep-away camp, so I'm missing them desperately."
Catherine and Michael married in November 2000, and the 43-year-old beauty previously revealed she found divorces “repulsive” and insisted it was “in her genes” to remain married for life.
When recently asked about the secret to a happy marriage, Catherine revealed it was important for couples to give each space and respect.
“Given the age difference, what’s remarkable is that we are so similar. We have a laidback easy-going relationship,” she smiled.
