Superstar soprano does Bach, Beatles and folk

By Andrew Moneastery

A trio of musical greats came together for a delicate evening's entertainment in Clonard Monastery.

Soprano Lesley Garrett, clarinetist Emma Johnson and pianist Andrew West delivered a specially devised programme of church music, opera, show tunes and pop.

Arranged by Johnson, the set included selections by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as something from Garrett's current CD, a couple of Irish folk songs, a piece from West Side Story, a Gershwin medley and even a cover of the Beatles.

As for the newly-restored building, it proved an imposing setting for the virtuoso display, said by the giggly Garrett to be literally “heavenly”.

The buxom chanteuse's heaving cleavage impressed almost as much as her excellent performance did.

Describing the music as being “witty, with darker moments and plenty of seductive charm”, the demure musician could also have been talking about herself.
