Hot flushes, romance and falling for Daniel

Friday, 4 July 2008

Take two women of a certain age, add a sprinkle of Daniel O'Donnell, a couple of hours of hot flushes and a good dollop of romance, and you've got the recipe for a hugely successful night of theatre, courtesy of Marie Jones.

Yes, Women on the Verge of HRT is back on the road, introducing audiences to two middle-aged Belfast women at the end of their tether.

Vera and Anna head off for Donegal on a weekend away for the annual concert by their superstar hero Daniel O'Donnell.

As they prepare to meet their heart-throb, the women reveal a lot more about themselves than their love of a good tune.

Dan Gordon and Marie Jones will once again share a stage in this heart-fluttering comedy, alongside Laura Hughes and Darren Greer.

The music strikes up on August 5, and temperatures continue to rise until August 16.

And staying on the subject of feisty females, if we look ahead a couple of weeks, we can find another bunch of them at the Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen.

Widow's Paradise is a comedy by Sam Cree which brings together five women in the unlikely setting of a caravan holiday

The friends decide to spend a weekend away together — but end up having to share their cramped accommodation with a group of fishermen.

Belvoir Players will give this comedy the full Cree treatment when they visit Enniskillen from July 17-19.

What were you doing when you were 12 years old? Kicking a football around? Watching Blue Peter? Pretending you were one of the Spice Girls?

Whatever ... I'm sure I can safely bet that you weren't struggling to write your first opera.

No prizes for guessing what Wolfgang Mozart was doing at the same age. Forget sticky back plastic and Man United — he was polishing off the opening chords of his opera Bastien and Bastienne.

It's a dramatic love story about young lovers traversing the rocky road of romance and it's been revivied by Opera Theatre Company, which is currently touring Northern Ireland with the 50-minute show.

Tomorrow night, Bastien and Bastienne visits Strule Arts Centre in Omagh — your chance to end the week on a high note.

It's a mystery where Mozart learned his musical talent — but some historical documentation suggests that he may have attended a Bruiser Summer School, where he honed his performance skills.

If that's so, Bruiser Theatre Company must have decided that one musical genius is enough — this year the summer school is concentrating purely on drama.

If you are aged between 14-21, and fancy life on the stage, then this event could be for you. It's a two-day intensive course on which young actors will get the chance to work with directors Lisa May and Ross Anderson, learning the physical style that has become Bruiser's trademark.

The summer school runs from July 7-31 at the Old Museum Arts Centre.
