Ballymena actress Mary-Frances Doherty on hosting Katie's Birthday Party
Ballymena born actress and writer Mary-Frances Doherty returns to the MAC in Belfast this week to perform her critically acclaimed solo show Katie's Birthday Party.
The play is aimed at children aged ten and above and looks at the struggles young people face at this age, namely exams, a new school, new friends and thoughts for the future.
"Predominately it looks at the cross over primary school to secondary school, particularly if you're living in a smaller village area of Northern Ireland and move to a bigger school," said Mary-Frances.
"The themes of the play look at the struggle young people face but the atmosphere is a party. When the audience enter the theatre they automatically become the guests at Katie's birthday party and so we sit in a circle.
"Throughout the show, the guests play along and interact with Katie in a series of games - it's a very fun from the start, but as it progresses and Katie reveals more information about herself, you get more of the issues coming through."
The plays is running at the MAC, Belfast from June 9-11.
Mary Frances has performed Katie's Birthday Party at the venue before and received huge acclaim for her work.
"It was included in the Belfast Children's Festival in 2015 as part of the Made in Northern Ireland showcase," she explained.
"The feedback has been fantastic, I first had the idea for the show in 2012 so I've performed it in quite a few places like England, Scotland, Germany as well as Northern Ireland.
"There's a lot of theatre for young people emerging more and more theses day, which there hadn't been before, and it is wonderful to see."
