Ballymena artist Paul Bell moo-ves to broaden his oeuvre

By Amanda Ferguson

Not Just Cows. This is the quirky title for Ballymena artist Paul Bell's new exhibition opening at the Eakin Gallery in south Belfast later this month.

Bell's fans will be familiar with his artwork of bovine beauties, but this first solo display in five years is broader, incorporating horses, zebras, giraffes, donkeys and more.

The exhibition opens at the Lisburn Road gallery on Saturday, September 27 and runs until October 11.

Bell is well-known across the globe for his strong cow paintings on colourful backgrounds.

They are much-sought-after for their strong physical resemblance to the subject matter and his passion to understand the internal make-up of the subject is ever present in the sculptural quality of his paintings.

Not Just Cows gives Bell the chance to moo-ve his career in a new direction.

"I am excited to be exhibiting in Belfast, it's been five years since my last solo show and I have spent that time working on new subjects," he said.

"I've always loved painting cows and am extremely proud of where they have brought me in my painting career, but I am pleased to have the opportunity to show there is much more to me as an artist."

And Paul added: "I plan to continue painting the cows for many years".
