Best picture display a success
Thursday, 21 June 2007
The photographic tribute, which has been on display in the Belfast Welcome Centre for more than a year, has raised almost £1,500 for the work of the George Best Foundation from donations made by visitors.
The Belfast Boy - A Photographic Tribute To Football Legend George Best opened on May 22 2006, the date George would have celebrated his 60th birthday. Formally unveiled by George's sister Barbara McNarry and father Dickie Best, it is now set to go on tour at a number of sites across the province.
The range of images include a picture of a 16-year-old George on a visit to the Belfast Telegraph sports department in 1961. And it concludes with poignant pictures taken around the time of his death and funeral in November and December 2005.
Four visitors' books have been filled with comments made by fans from across the globe.
Among the tributes were Vadim and Volodyo from Moscow in Russia who wrote: " Fantastic opportunity for Moscow Reds to say that George Best is the greatest footballer ever. Never forgotten."
While Paul Blaney from Ontario, Canada left the message: "Greatest ever. True genius."
Barbara McNarry said she had been delighted by the response to the exhibition.
"I would like to thank the Belfast Telegraph and Belfast Visitor Bureau for putting this exhibition together."
The free exhibition is open at the Welcome Centre from 9am-7pm, Monday to Saturday and 11am- 4pm on Sundays.
