Debut Broadway role earns Cynthia Erivo a Tony Award
Cynthia Erivo has achieved glory at the Tony Awards with her debut Broadway role after a string of appearances in West End productions.
Her first big break came in a production of The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg in 2011 before she secured the lead role in the UK tour of Sister Act.
Playing Whoopi Goldberg's character from the hit film, Deloris Van Cartier, Erivo took on another role portrayed by the American actress in The Color Purple.
The stage version of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sees her character, Celie Harris Johnson, age from eight years old to 50 over the course of the musical.
