Final reel Riverdance begins farewell tour
Tuesday, 27 January 2009
Riverdance, the celtic dance that launched the international career of the ‘Lord of the Dance’ himself Michael Flatley, has begun it’s farewell tour of the UK, although Northern Ireland fans will not be treated to one last performance.
The Irish dancing show began its final tour in Bristol last night — 15 years after it first opened at The Point Theatre in Dublin — and will take in 14 different cities along the way before finishing in Liverpool on April 25.
However, local fans will not be treated to a home performance of the heel-and-toe-tapping phenomenon and will instead have to wait until one of the dance troupes returns to Dublin in June.
Riverdance first came to prominence following it’s dazzling display during the interval of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest.
The performance, which featured Irish Dancing champion Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, received a standing ovation.
It has since been seen live by 21 million people in more than 300 venues worldwide, throughout 32 countries and on four continents.
Riverdance, which has three companies, are also on a final tour of the US and has promised to return to every venue the show has ever played, which will take three years to achieve.
Riverdance will be at the Bristol Hippodrome until January 31, before heading to Plymouth on their eighth and final tour.

I just came back from seeing the show. As there is ugly in the world, there is beauty. I'll remember this beauty. Thank you Riverdance!

Adele, I understand where you are coming from. I have seen the show three times, the first time was at Hammersmith about six years ago (fantastic) the second was Plymouth where I thought the reduction in performers was because the stage is smaller at Plymouth, but on Sat 21st back at Hammersmith it was obvious that the troop was much reduced and as Adele commented the format seems to have changed somewhat and I agree there was to much singing and not enough action, but at the end of the evening it has to be said that it was a great performance by all and the standing ovation was well deserved. One last comment is why did the drummer have to drum over the performers foot taps in some of the closing sequences, it spoilt it for me.

Went to see Riverdance in Hammersmith last night. If this is the last tour in its present form, it is understandable.
We went to see the wonderful dancing. We had to sit through rather a large amount of dreary, dirge like singing by a small group in the costume of the middle ages. Quite pleasant, but far too much of the dismal stuff. We also didn't need two solos from the violin player. One, would have been quite enough.
Not enough of the wonderful, uplifting and exciting dance that is so Riverdance.
If the show is reformed in another format, let's hope the above is noted.

Hate to see the show end. Not only the music but the performance takes my breath away.

Just been to see the show in Bristol and the whole thing was a credit to all who performed there.
They deserved the standing ovations the audience gave them.
Well done fantastic show as always.
