Sir Kenneth Branagh has signed up to develop and direct a big screen Disney adaptation of the hit book series Artemis Fowl.

The best-selling books by Irish author Eoin Colfer are about a 12-year-old millionaire and criminal genius who kidnaps a fairy in order to save his family, but doesn’t realise what he is up against.

Belfast-born Branagh directed Disney’s hugely successful Cinderella, which grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

As one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood, Branagh could turn the teen anti-hero into the next Harry Potter.

The adaptation has been in development limbo for more than a decade, but looks set to move forward now that Branagh’s bankable name is attached to it.
