Lady Boys of Bangkok heading to Northern Ireland
Thursday, 17 September 2009
They may look like a group of gorgeous girls — but everything is not as it seems.
Dressed in sequinned hotpants and scarlet red crop tops, these lovely ladies could be the next Girls Aloud or Pussycat Dolls.
But on closer inspection — much closer inspection — these women are actually men.
And the Lady Boys of Bangkok are heading to Northern Ireland for the first time, with their sensational Mile High Tour.
Billed as a ‘glamorous cocktail of cabaret, dance and comedy’, the flamboyant show will be performed in the Spiegeltent at Custom House Square twice nightly for a fortnight from November 7 to 21.
Demand is exected to be high for tickets to the top-selling show.
For the past seven years the Lady Boys of Bangkok have entertained large crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Up to 16 sexy show-girls (who just happen to be men) will take to the stage for a night of of cabaret, combining Bangkok’s exotic nightlife with the stunning appeal of Las Vegas.
The Lady Boys will perform a range of chart hits and West End musical favourites, from Riverdance to Dirty Dancing Katy Perry to Kylie.
A spokeswoman for the show said: “We are delighted that the Lady Boys of Bangkok are making their Belfast debut.
“The show has sold out in Edinburgh for the past seven years and we’re expecting it to be a similar success story in Belfast.
“It’s not a vulgar show or sexual in any way, it’s just a great night’s entertainment, aimed at anyone and everyone.”

Will pingpong balls be used?

I wonder will they get the same protests as the gay pride parades get?

I am so excited about the Lady Boys coming to Belfast - how fun, exciting and glam...! We've heard tickets are going like crazy - we've got a big girls night planned already...

It's the best night out at the theatre I've had in years. My wife and I go to the show every year in Edinburgh - it was fantastic - great fun. We'd love to see it in Belfast with an audience of folk who really know how to enjoy themselves (sorry Andy and Liam)

Whether you'd be into this kind of thing or not, it's great to see it coming to Belfast.. It's just embarrassing that shows which tour the world to widespread acclaim can't come here for fear of causing offence. On a similar (controversial) note, was told yesterday the belfast festival show coming up in the opera house takes a whopping dig at Iris and her comments last year... Looks like October's going to be Free P month!

Danny La Rue made a fortune doing this and nobody batted an eye so what's the problem. I live in Bangkok and nobody takes any notice of Katoeys unless they go out to be offended. It's suprising to see how many guys have a night out with these 'ladies' when in Thailand and that includes many I meet from N.I.

OMG, can you believe this? years of bloody history and belfast folk rolling their eyes on this harmless show! No wonder you are still killing each other! bloody grow up! travel out once a while out your misery lot and see how the world has moved on your guys already been left 50 years behind hah!

I suppose this will bring out the morals-police again looking to be offended

I have actually seen the show and the audience consisted mainly of couples, female office workers and grannies. The performers dance, change costumes and mime to pop tunes. You would get more eroticism at a church social. Grow up!

Sound's like good show, I must see if I can get some tickets, I just hope the Free P's aren't blocking my way like the idiots did when Jesus Christ Superstar came to town a few years back!
If you don't like this kind of thing, then why not have a prayer night in your churches and let us enjoy it, you don't have moral authority over me or anyone else.

And tell me folks......Why don't we tolerate these guys dressing up, singing and dancing and yet we allow ourselves to be entertained by John Linehan, Eddie Izzard, Les Patterson, et al.
Not many Free P's protesting at our very own Lady Boy at the Chritmas Panto every year.
This is just another bunch of guys dressing up to entertain the crowds.

Andy and Liam. You're very easily 'disgusted' this is just harmless fun. You're remarks say an awful lot about you, BTW.

Gerry - Of course we had a look, we have to do that to make a comment about it. Although, by the sounds of it you had a good look and liked what you saw!!! Whatever floats your boat mate!!
Posted by Liam | 17.09.09, 16:04 GMT
Ah for goodness sake people, welcome to the present day, each to their own, if you don't like it don't go see it.
Posted by nellie | 17.09.09, 15:55 GMT
Andy and Liam - for all your disgust and disapproval, you still had a good look anyway!
Harmless If not exactly clean) fun IMO - it takes all sorts to make a world and I'd rather be subjected to 30 years of this kind of stuff as opposed to bloodshed, conflict and heartbreak. Over to you, Iris.
