Roddy's Doyle's The Commitments coming to the West End

More than two decades on from the bestselling book and the cult classic film, Roddy's Doyle's 'The Commitments' is coming to the West End stage later this year.

Producers of the stage show estimate that as many as half a million people will watch it during its year-long London run, which opens in October.

Last month, open auditions were held in Dublin to find potential cast members, with "authentic" local accents a top priority.

A spokeswoman for the show said no roles had been cast as yet.

The novel was published to critical acclaim in 1987 and four years later was turned into a hit film.

The musical, which has been two years in the making, has been adapted from the novel by Booker Prize-winning author Doyle himself and is directed by award-winning Jamie Lloyd.

The show is packed with soul classics, such as 'You Keep Me Hangin' On' and 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine', with all songs performed live by the cast.
