Best of Booker titles out for votes
Wednesday, 11 June 2008
Forget Nancy and Britain has Talent and even the hint of another Assembly election — the next big thing attracting the attention of Northern Ireland voters is The Best of the Booker.
Since Nancy was chosen to sing to her Oliver and the Talents sorted out there has been an upturn in the number of votes from the province in the direction of the one-off award to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the famous book prize.
"Voting from Ulster is definitely strong right now," said Veronique Norton at Booker headquarters.
The six shortlisted books chosen from the 41 Booker Prize and Man Booker Prize winners down the years are:
Pat Barker's The Ghost Road 1995; Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda 1988; J M Coetzee's Disgrace 1999; Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist 1974; J G Farrell's The Siege of Krishnapur 1973 and Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children 1981.
Rushdie won the only previous celebratory award in 1993 — the 25th anniversary —with Midnight's Children.
The Best of the Booker winner will be announced on July 10
