Jan answers your health-related questions

My aunt has several health problems but she would like some help with the pain she suffers from post-hepatic neuralgia.

It would benefit your aunt to take a strong vitamin B12 that is easily absorbed. I would suggest Bioactive B12, one tablet sucked daily. I would also suggest the natural painkiller Phytodolor and perhaps dab the affected areas with Shingle Lotion from Abbotts of Leigh, mornings and evenings, using cotton wool.

I stopped smoking 40 years ago and have not smoked since. About three months after I stopped I began to be troubled with catarrh. I've tried everything I can think of with no effect. It takes ages each morning to clear both nostrils, which has to be repeated several times a day. Can you help please as I am at my wits end?

Firstly take a look at your diet, as this is often relevant in catarrhal conditions, with white flour, sugar and dairy foods being the common culprits. Reduce or completely avoid these foods and take Plantago to help disperse accumulated congestion. Also gargle with three to five drops of Poho Oil in a little water twice a day to help clear the upper sinus passages.

Can you suggest something for my 32-year-old niece who is suffering from inflammation at the back of her eyes? This is affecting her eyesight badly. She has been prescribed eye drops and is attending the hospital regularly but she is very distressed at the lack of improvement.

Without knowing the cause of the inflammation is it difficult to advise her on the most suitable remedies, however, she could safely take Vision Essentials. This contains Lutein and Bilberry, which will help provide retina support. She could also try taking some Pycnogenol for extra antioxidant support too.
