A MAN was critically ill in hospital today after being shot five times in the chest in a Co Down housing estate.

Stephen Paul, who is in his 20s, was seriously injured in the gun attack in Kilcooley on the outskirts of Bangor.

Despite his injuries, he managed to stagger several hundred yards to a main road where he was picked up by an ambulance.

Mr Paul is a nephew of William 'Wassy' Paul, who was shot dead in a neighbouring street in the mainly loyalist estate last July.

The RUC today returned to the scene of the shooting in Ballywalter Gardens to carry out a detailed examination.

Elsewhere police were investigating the death of man in his 20s whose body was found in a Newry house.

It is understood that suicide has not been ruled out as the cause of death.
