Eddie's flag of distress

I Think it is diabolical that Eddie Irvine's parents are receiving abusive phone calls from misguided people because of their son's actions.

Had Eddie told the Formula 1 authorities at the start to fly the Union Flag there would not have been any controversy.

Joey Dunlop, Mary Peters and all the other great sporting stars from Ulster (Catholic and Protestant) are happy enough with the Union Flag being flown when they do well in their respective sports. Why not Eddie? The notion he had for flying a white flag decorated with a shamrock and having the Londonderry Air as a national anthem is, to my mind, wrong.

When he says that he thought he had sorted it out with the organisers after the last time, it would not surprise me if the organisers had forgotten all about it as it has taken him so long to get back on the podium. The Tricolour does not seem to bring him much luck.
