Man accused of murder at Monkstown

About a dozen friends of the victim hurled abuse at the accused as he was led from court at the end of the short hearing.

KerrÕs distraught elderly mother said: ÒHeÕs not guiltyÓ and had to be helped from court in tears.

A detective inspector said that after he was arrested and cautioned Kerr replied: ÒI definitely did not murder this woman.ÓA solicitor for the defendant asked the RUC officer if it was true that his client had denied any involvement in the crime in seven or eight interviews. The dectective answered ÒyesÓ.

He asked for the accused to be remanded in custody so he could continue his inquiries.

Kerr, dressed in a white T-shirt and cream trousers, was remanded in custody to appear at the Maze Court on September 24.

Miss BennettÕs body was discovered at her Tynan Drive home at tea-time on Sunday. She had suffered multiple stab wounds.

The victim had lived with her mother who was on holiday in Scotland at the time. She was last seen alive at 2am on Sunday.
