Ulster teacher in dock for 'lewd acts'

A TYRONE teacher played with himself in front of Muslim girls at a posh English school, a London court has been told.

Shay Kernaghan (27), originally from Coalisland, hid behind piles of books while the girls laughed "to cover up their fear", jurors heard at Southwark Crown Court yesterday.

On the first day of Kernaghan's trial, a prosecuting barrister informed the court that the Ulster teacher had been highly recommended to the east London school and was well-respected as a good teacher.

The court heard he ran an intermediate business studies class for a small group of pupils aged 16 and 17.

The prosecutor said: "By their own admission, the girls were loud, rude and poorly behaved.

"On several occasions he would set the girls a business studies test and then masturbate behind his desk. The Crown say it was obvious he was doing this.

"He derived a thrill from the girls' proximity, who could not fail to notice what he was up to.

"One said, 'he always had books and chairs around his desk. We pointed out that he was doing something. He turned red'."

The girls eventually told another teacher in December 2003.

The prosecutor said: "One girl said they very easily saw everything. He was being that blatant."

The barrister added: "In case the girls couldn't believe their eyes, forensic scientists found the teacher's semen on two chairs."

When police confronted the teacher, Kernaghan said he had had sexual encounters with someone in the classroom.

He said that it was not a student but refused to give officers the person's name.

The jury of six men and six women were told the incident was "unfortunate" because the pupils genuinely liked him.

Kernaghan, of Ballards Lane, Finchley, north London, denies four counts of abusing a position of trust and four counts of committing an act of lewd abusive and disgusting nature and outraging public decency between October 1 and December 12 in 2003.

He is originally from Maple Brook Lane, Gortgonis Road, Coalisland.
