Boxing Day sales are getting under way as high street retailers open their doors to bargain-savvy shoppers.

Selfridges stores in Birmingham and Manchester will start trading at 8am, and the London flagship is set to open at 9am.

Debenhams is holding what it has called its biggest ever sale.

Customers shopping online were able to get their hands on discounts two days early via the department store's website.

A number of other chains, including Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's, as well as Halfords, Comet and John Lewis also stole a march by cutting online prices before Christmas.

DIY chain B&Q began its sale both on its website and in stores on Christmas Eve.

With Boxing Day falling on a Saturday, retailers are expecting this to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

TV presenter and actress Amanda Holden will open the Harrods sale at 10am.

She will be accompanied by children from Great Ormond Street as the Knightsbridge store has committed to raising £300,000 for the hospital.
