Ice-hockey: Kelman points to full-on title battle

Todd Kelman is predicting one of the tightest league championship races for many years as the clock ticks down towards the new season.

The Belfast Giants general manager knows what he is talking about compared to some of the other team bosses around the league as he is fresh from ten years as a professional player.

In that time he won three league titles in the UK - one with the Bracknell Bees and two in Belfast - and while he would love the Monteith Bowl to be coming back across the Irish Sea at the end of the season, Kelman knows Ed Courtenay and his players will not have it easy.

"Overall, I would say that we are a much improved squad from last season," Kelman told the Belfast Giants official website.

"Only problem is, the entire league looks like they are much improved.

"Usually the league is a four horse race, but this season I think the league title could go to almost anyone.

"Teams like Basingstoke and Newcastle both look like they could challenge with the usual suspects at the top of the league.

"Still, when I run through our line-up I like what I see. Size, strength and speed.

"I am hoping our loyal fans give the new guys a few games to show us what they can do before we decide the fate of this year's Belfast Giants."

It is not just Kelman's absence that the Giants will have to make up for this season.

Jason Ruff's decision to retire has left a gap that may not be filled in a hurry and others will have to come to the fore and chip in with goals.

"I am sure many of our fans are disappointed to lose Jason Ruff, particularly so close to the start of the new season," said Kelman.

"Jason is a Giant legend, actually THE Giant legend and will be missed by all of us, but the show must go on and it will.

"I am confident in this year's line-up and although some of the names might not seem too familiar, the best players don't always come from other teams around the league.

"The new Belfast Giants all have strengths that they are bringing to the line-up."

Must we stand idly by while world leaders spout this codswallop?

Funny how the news agenda gets tired. Like the quotes. Only a couple of months ago, we were all bracing for Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear installations. And for serious pressure on Bashar al-Assad to end his "barbaric campaign".

Don't let sisters stop you looking for love, Cheryl

What's wrong with wanting a man? I ask because lately I've lost count of the miserable, lonely female celebrities being told by other women that they should stay single.

Seeing is believing when it comes to the justice system

A Bill in the Queen’s Speech will, hopefully, speed up the process of letting some more sunlight into Northern Ireland’s rather musty justice system.

So that's why their pupils were glazed in Play School

Odd period, the 1970s. I've tended to deride them as grim, which they certainly were, but I appreciate now the music and, er, that's about it. They weren't particularly happy years in Northern Ireland.

Tragedy is opportunity for conflict resolution envoys

The Good Friday Agreement is a cure for which there is no known illness. Nowhere in its 11,000 words does it identify the problem which it purports to solve.
