Aidan Turner has laughed at the strangeness that putting on costumes is part of his job.

The Irish actor made a name for himself in TV show Being Human, before going on to helm the role of dwarf Kili in The Hobbit movies.

His latest venture, TV series Poldark, has been a global hit. Set in the late 18th century the cast have to wear period costume, which Aidan thinks is so realistic he sometimes forgets where he is.

"Yeah, we do a very strange job. You put on a costume and you’re on set, and sometimes you look around and you don’t see the film crew. You just see other actors wearing the same period costume, and the set looks like that, and you couldn’t be closer to that world. It’s a mad thing. You do pinch yourself sometimes," he smiled to Collider.

It's not just the period costumes and Cornish accents that got people talking when the show aired in the UK earlier this year; Aidan also showed off a chiselled torso for his lead role of Ross Poldark.

However he didn't keep the intense fitness regime up when the cameras stopped rolling, with the 32-year-old admitting he's now back to his pre-Poldark body.

"I'm not like that now," he previously laughed to the UK edition of OK! magazine. "I'm back to my usual, soft self. I see the pictures from the show and think, 'How did I do that?' because I don't look like that anymore."
