Anna Chlumsky Emmys dress designer expected bad reaction
Christian Siriano insists he and Veep star Anna Chlumsky intended to take a risk with her adventurous Emmys dress.
Designer Christian Siriano is unfazed by the poor response to Veep star Anna Chlumsky's Emmys dress.
Chlumsky made quite a statement on the red carpet on Sunday (18Sep16) but reviews were definitely mixed with one unimpressed critic comparing the short shift with a cape design to a potato sack.
Designer Christian is honeymooning in Barcelona, Spain, where he was contacted by PeopleStyle for a chat about the fashion controversy.
“This was a collaboration,” he says of Anna's dress, one of nine of his designs that appeared on the red carpet. "She really wanted something very vintage. She has a lot of vintage references, like old-school ‘40s, ‘50s dresses.
"And she wanted this very weird shape because she just had a baby. So she really, I think, didn’t want to show too much of her body, but still wanted to look cool.”
Siriano insists he isn't surprised or disappointed by the reactions because he was expecting them.
“I think definitely it was a risk,” he admits. “The fabric was a risk. The shape was a risk. But it was cool. People get very scared of what they haven’t seen before. Like, 'Oh, I hate it', or, 'Oh, it’s not working', because it’s just new to them. But I think that’s okay. We all knew it was going to be something fun and different and not everybody would get it and that’s okay.”
The 2008 Project Runway winner whose debut collection Christian Siriano was a huge hit says he cared most about his client feeling comfortable on the day.
“Anna could not have been happier,” he insists. “She picked the fabric. She loved it. It was just something about her feeling. Like at the end of the day, she just had a baby. She doesn’t care what people are saying. She’s thinking about her body and how she feels on a red carpet and she’s nominated.”
Siriano says he and Chlumsky, who gave birth to her second daughter, Clara Elizabeth, with husband Shaun So on July 28 (16), aren't worrying too much about those who weren't fans of the dress.
"I think it’s sometimes fun to take a little risk every now and then,” he says. “It’s not like we sought out to make a weird dress.”
