Dame Helen Mirren didn't really understand the concept of borrowing dresses for red carpet events early on in her career.

Dame Helen Mirren has always been a big fan of Mark Badgley and James Mischka's designs because their dresses are always red-carpet perfect.

The Oscar winner was among the Badgley Mischka devotees who showed up at the fashion-forward pair's Badgley Mischka: American Glamour book launch in New York on Wednesday night (18Nov15), and she admits she was delighted to help her friends promote the tome - because they've been so kind and generous towards her over the years.

"I'm a huge fan and I've worn their clothes very often," Mirren, who was dressed in a B&M gold twin set for the launch, tells WWD.com. "My relationship with them started very early on, when I first started having to go to these red carpet events.

"I was a bit of an innocent in the whole thing of borrowing dresses, I didn't know how you did all of that. I was so lucky that one of my first experiences was calling upon Badgley Mischka, and them being so incredibly generous, so easy. I put one of their dresses on, zipped it up and it just fit me perfectly."

Mirren's red carpet fashions came full circle at her recent Woman in Gold premiere, when she also wore Badgley Mischka.

The beloved Brit admits she's now a red carpet expert and there's one piece of advice she always imparts when people ask her about her choices.

"People ask me, 'What's your advice for going on the red carpet?'" she explains. "I always say, 'Be comfortable'. Because if you're comfortable, you're happy, and you can enjoy yourself. Also, when you find a form, a designer who designs for your sort of shape, you stick like glue to them."

Meanwhile, it seems Dame Helen is also a big fan of her favourite designers' new book, which they launched at Bergdorf Goodman on Wednesday night.

"It's beautiful, it's an art book," she coos. "It's a great Christmas present for all the woman out there who love fashion."
