Barrymore: I smell like a hippie

Drew Barrymore is over the moon her favourite smell is back en vogue - especially as she's just launched three new perfumes.

The Hollywood actress has become a make-up magnate in recent years, with her cosmetics line Flower Beauty going from strength to strength.

The brand recently added fragrances to its offerings, with a launch party held on Tuesday for the three new scents.

"I have been a patchouli girl my whole life - I'm a dirty hippie," Drew smiled to Lucky magazine when asked what her first fragrance is.

"When I met [Flower Beauty's perfumer,] Stephen Nilsen, I was like, 'Look, I love things that aren't going to sell, like old lady rose and hippie patchouli,' and he said, 'Oh no, patchouli is one of the top accords in the best selling fragrances in the world!' I was like, 'Yes!'"

Flower is known for its face, lip and eye cosmetics, but Drew relished the chance to learn more about the art of making perfume.

The three new smells are Cherished, a soft, powdery scent, Radiant, which is fresh and dewy, and Sultry, a romantic, spicy, oriental floral.

When testing smells, Drew was nearly faced with a moral dilemma when she realised the origins of one scent.

"There's a scent called ambergris. [When I was testing it] I became voracious over it, I was like, 'I want it! I need more!' I kept grabbing it and smelling it like a little piglet and I said, 'What is this?' Well, ambergris is whale vomit. When whales eat squid, I believe, they throw it up and what's in the stomach to break down the squid has this potent, knee-buckling scent to women. Now they've decided to do a molecular copy of it because they don't want to hurt whales, and thank god for that. It's in some of the best perfumes. I love me some ambergris!" she smiled.
