Beth Ditto wanted make-up career

Beth Ditto has wanted to be a make-up artist since she was five.

The American star fronts the band Gossip but never expected to make it in music. Instead, she set her heart on working with cosmetics because she thought there was more chance of that happening.

"From the age of five, I wanted to be a make-up artist. I used to have a job in the small town I lived in in Arkansas, making up little old ladies every Sunday," she recalled to the latest edition of UK magazine InStyle. "It was always my plan A, as becoming a musician seemed so unrealistic."

Beth and her sisters loved fashion and beauty when they growing up. They all looked up to their mother because she was so stylish, although their mom was amazed by how different all her children were.

"I'm one of three daughters and my mum says she doesn't understand where we all got our style from - personally, I was infatuated with Boy George, Cyndi Lauper, Mary Tyler Moore and Patty Duke," she laughed. "My sisters and I would get dressed up and play outside and sometimes we would be chased by snakes. We had to run home in dresses made out of sheets and our mom's wedges."
