Bethany Mota: Don’t blindly follow trends

Bethany Mota doesn’t see style trends as rules, instead taking inspiration from blogs and magazines.

The 18-year-old has become an Internet sensation after launching a YouTube channel which sees her giving tutorials on how to wear the latest fashions from the comfort of her own bedroom. She now has nearly six million subscribers and now has her own clothing line at retailer Aéropostale but Bethany admits she isn’t totally dictated to by what is on the high street.

“I read a bunch of different magazines and I go on random blogs,” she told People Magazine. “I’m not too into the trends — I like to look at trends as suggestions, not as rules.”

The North Californian native makes sure that she doesn’t push her own tastes on to her followers, or besties as she calls them. Instead she asks them what they want to see next, and the most popular requests are about the drugstore makeup and hair products that she uses.

“Maybelline’s Precise Ink Pen Liner is by far the easiest liquid eyeliner I’ve ever used,” she revealed. “I’m really bad at applying liquid liner and it glides on so nicely and actually stays on all day.”

Her besties seem to agree, as the video featuring the product received over two million hits. Her fans also played an integral part in helping her with her first fashion line.

“I go on Twitter and I ask my viewers, ‘What would you like to see next season in my line?’ or ‘What are things you love to wear?’” she explained. “They’re the ones wearing it so I want to make sure it applies to them. So I want to make sure it is a combination of what I want to wear and stuff I’d want to buy.”
