Beyoncé Knowles' feline eyes
Beyoncé Knowles' On The Run Tour make-up artist Sir John has opened up on how to recreate her latest look.
The Drunk in Love singer and her husband Jay Z took to the road last week to begin their joint stadium tour, taking in dates across North America and Canada before finishing in Paris on September 13.
Part of her style team includes make-up artist Sir John, who has opened up about her latest show looks.
The performances span more than 40 songs so a lot of different looks are involved, but Sir John explains a cat eye is consistent throughout.
For numbers that he's pressed for time with the cosmetics king teams the feline flick with shocking orange lips, but for a more lengthy session in the make-up chair Beyoncé rocks a smoky eye.
“We’re going to go back and forth between the two, but what’s going to run parallel in both looks is the fact that there’s this feline sensibility to the eye,” Sir John revealed to style.com.
The inspiration behind the finished look is traditional Arabian liner. A black waterproof gel formula is applied using a precise brush —placing a point on the outer corner where the wing will end to avoid any “lopsided situations.”
Sir John then colours underneath the top lash line for added intensity. On the lower waterline he employs a coffee shade, blending it gently down onto the bottom lashes.
“I do black on the top and [brown on the bottom], but all of this registers as black onstage,” he said. “If I do black [all the way around], it can make a person look tired.”
To complete the make-up he adds a sweep of shimmer-free “Crayola orange” lipstick. “It’s summertime, so there’s no better time to pull it off,” he enthused. “We’re in stadiums - like World Cup-size stadiums - so we wanted something that would read to the rafters and give her face a sense of life and vitality.”
