Burgundy offers a touch of class

To add rich, sumptuous colour to a winter wardrobe, pick some key pieces in burgundy.

Burgundy is a signifier of wealth and opulence, the colour has even been associated with royalty.

The tone was seen all over this season's runway.

Kenzo used open weave knits to enhance darker colours. They layered the look under heavier jackets and paired it with patchwork skirts in the same palette.

Roberto Cavalli brought the look to life by teaming rich shawls with black minidresses. The whole look was then pulled together by an injection of wine-coloured tights.

Diesel Black and Gold went full-on with the look and used all over burgundy on their outfits. Skin tight leather trousers in deep maroon clung to fine knit tops in carmine that flashed a little pale flesh underneath.

For daytime take inspiration from Kenzo by layering darker jackets on top of a key burgundy knit. Bring the tone through with accessories and make-up. Try warming up cheeks with a windburn blush. For a more daring daytime look team a dark skirt or dress with attention-grabbing burgundy tights.

For the evening try a rock chic take on the trend and wear burgundy leather trousers. They must be spray-on tight and pair with a darker top. To complete the look add a claret lip for an outfit full of attitude.
