Cancer-stricken Shannen Doherty sent designer scarves
The star is grateful to have her loved ones' support after shaving off her long hair.
Cancer-stricken actress Shannen Doherty has been styling her newly-shaved head with scarves sent to her by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star recently posted a series of images on social media, documenting her change of hairstyle after chemotherapy treatment caused her signature long, dark locks to fall out in clumps.
Shannen, 45, has since opened up about her breast cancer fight in a tearful interview with U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight, in which she admitted losing her hair was one of the most emotional parts of her health battle.
"After my second treatment, my hair was really matted, like in dreadlocks. And I went to try and brush it out, and it just fell out," the actress recalled. "I just remember holding onto huge clumps of my hair in my hands, and just running to my mum crying, like, 'My hair, my hair, my hair, my hair.'"
She continued, "It was just shedding and it was driving me crazy. It was just clumps, and I was like, 'Just grab the kitchen scissors.' And my mum's like, 'Wait, wait, wait.' I'm just, like, 'Grab it.' She went and grabbed the kitchen scissors, and put it in a ponytail and she just chopped it off. And it was this cute little bob, but it wasn't enough, you know, it was falling out."
Shannen went on to explain how she turned a heartbreaking experience into a fun styling session with the help of her mother and best friends.
"We did stages," she remembered. "We did a pixie. And then we did a mohawk, which was my favourite look. And then finally, we had to get the shaver thing and just buzz it off."
The star's husband, film producer Kurt Iswarienko, was working on location during the hairy ordeal, but he made his support for his wife known by regularly checking in on her and giving her a much needed confidence boost as she unveiled her new shorn look.
"He was in Mexico working and he was texting non-stop in the middle of his photoshoot like, 'Give me pictures, and are you OK? I wish I could be there,'" she said. "He was so stricken that he wasn't there with me but I sent him pictures and videos and he was like, 'Oh my God. You're hot with no hair.' So you know, everybody kind of made me feel better about it."
Doherty has taken to wearing scarves on her head and she reveals some of the fashionable accessories were personally shipped to her by von Furstenberg, a gesture she really appreciated as she continues to get used to her new image.
And the actress is hopeful that sharing her story on TV will help others understand just how tough fighting cancer can be - and aid others who may be going through similar health struggles.
"People don't realise that cancer - yes, it ages you - but also, you can balloon up from the various meds," she explained. "There are so many different reactions you have and so I just - I didn't want someone to take a picture of me coming out of the grocery store and be like, 'Oh God, look at her.'
"I wanted to put it out there the way it felt the best for me to put it out there," she added. "And also, if I could help one person then it makes me go, 'Oh OK.' It's easier to live with having cancer if I know I'm helping at least one person."
