Dame Joan: Hollywood style is boring
Dame Joan Collins thinks people need to mix up their red carpet looks a little more.
The 81-year-old actress prides herself on being polished at all times and always does her own make-up for events. She thinks more people could take a leaf out of her book, explaining she was completely underwhelmed by the fashion she saw at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month.
"I thought the best dressed was Amal Clooney. Jennifer Lopez and Meryl Streep also looked good. Otherwise I didn't think much of the fashion," she told British magazine Hello! "There seems to be a certain sheep mentality among some of the actresses to look the same."
Amal's choice of outfit came as a surprise to many. She opted for a black Dior Haute Couture gown, but jazzed it up with a pair of white elbow-length gloves.
For Joan, the look harked back to a time she is a massive fan of.
"Everybody wore mink stoles and gorgeous gowns at night. When I came here I was 21, which was still the golden age - Lana Turner, Barbara Stanwyck, Susan Hayward, Marilyn Monroe... Everybody had their own style. These women, including Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, did their own hair and make-up and they always looked incredible," she said.
Joan prides herself on her appearance. She works out and makes sure she neither gains nor loses too much weight. The actress has also never given in to plastic surgery, even if she's considered it once or twice. In the end, she's always realised she looks better as she is.
"I don't want to look like a plastic Barbie doll. I saw a very famous actress the other day. You could see all the lumps under her skin from the fillers and she could barely move her face. It was horrific," she said.
