Dascha Polanco: 'I am a Barbie pillow master'
Orange is the New Black star Dascha Polanco is obsessed with portable steamers and velvet hangers.
Orange is the New Black star Dascha Polanco mastered the art of tailoring pillows for Barbies in her childhood.
The actress is currently promoting her new movie Joy, which was inspired by the life story of household product inventor Joy Mangano - the woman who made a fortune by introducing hit domestic items such as the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers to the market.
Although Dascha fashioned up nifty articles for the home as a young girl, she admits only dolls were the recipients of items she sewed.
“I invented pillows for my Barbie,” she told The Cut. “I would take ribbons that you use, like, for a dress, I would cut pieces, stuff them with my mum’s cotton balls and then sew it. She never had the Barbie Dream house, but she had the pillows.”
Nowadays, Dascha is so thankful for Mangano's inventions, as her wardrobe has never been the same since she discovered Huggable Hangers - which are finished off with a velvet-like fabric that prevents clothes from falling to the ground.
“I have all the velvet hangers!” she gushed. “And I didn’t even know she (Mangano) made them! And also the boxes. I never knew Joy made those boxes. I was like, 'These are my favourite boxes!' And you know what else? The steamer, the portable steamer — you HAVE to get it. It changes your life.”
Although she loves keeping her clothes organised with Huggable Hangers and wrinkle-free with a steamer, Dascha has previously revealed her appreciation for mismatching outfits.
The actress is the mother of three children and she doesn't care if her tots dress themselves in clashing clothing for school, telling Fashion & Style: "As long as it’s appropriate and they’re comfortable, why not? It’s part of growing up and being creative, getting away with stuff that you can’t get away with when you’re in the corporate work world."
Dascha is known for changing up her style frequently, especially when it comes to hair colour, having donned red, brown, gray and fuscia hues within the span of a few months.
The colour she chooses to dye her hair "all depends on the moment" for Dascha and the same type of philosophy applies to her clothing selection too, with the star explaining, "I dress for the mood... Sometimes I just want to wear a big old tee, pair it with heels and rock it out! I like to dress according to how I wake up. Some days I want to dress in a masculine suit with a cap on and chill. What makes it is how you wear it, how you feel."
