Dockery: Downton is trendy

Michelle Dockery says her character's sense of style is more "mature" in the new season of Downton Abbey.

The British actress plays Lady Mary Crawley in the popular UK period drama. Downton Abbey will soon return for a fourth season and Mary's wardrobe will once again have a huge impact in each scene.

"They're [Mary and her sisters] certainly the bright young things of the '20s. Mary is always very aware of fashions. She looks very stylish, but there's a maturity about her this year because she's a mother and lots has changed,” she explained to British magazine Grazia.

At the end of the last season, Mary's character experienced extreme highs and lows. She gave birth to her first child - a son called George, but just hours later her husband Matthew Crawley was killed in a car crash.

The new episodes will take place some months after Matthew's death and Mary's sombre wardrobe will reflect her heartache. However, a series of eligible bachelors will step in to offer support to Mary and she will ditch the drab outfits as the season progresses.

"Mary has been in mourning for six months and once you come out of wearing black you move into purples, greys and lilacs," Michelle explained. "It's only at the end that she becomes a bit more colourful."

Earlier this year, the 31-year-old brunette revealed that the period drama had inspired her to be more daring with her choice of clothes in real life.

“My character wears a lot of bold jewel tones. I never thought a colour like red would suit me, but now I find myself wearing more of these colours off the show as well. I like giving a nod to Downton,” she smiled.

“I’m quite into the French way - simple elegance with just a suggestion of sexiness, nothing vulgar.”
