Dungannon honours Darren Clarke
He's more used to driving golf balls, but if he chooses to, Darren Clarke can now drive sheep through his home town.
That’s one of the perks open to the superstar golfer after he was the first person to be awarded the Freedom of Dungannon and South Tyrone.
Clark (42) was presented with the honour during a ceremony at Dungannon Golf Club in yesterday afternoon.
He returned to the course where his career began after fulfilling a lifetime’s ambition and winning the prestigious Open tournament at Royal St George’s this year. Speaking at the club, Clarke said he felt honoured to be receiving the award.
“It’s been a huge honour that Dungannon Borough Council have given to me and it’s good to be back again. It has been some time since I’ve been here,” he said.
“This is where I began playing the game — lots of very fond memories from a very long time ago.”
Clarke still holds the course record, which is proudly on display in the clubhouse.
In August councillors decided to award the Co Tyrone man the honour after his stunning Open win in July this year after his 20th attempt at the title.
