Elizabeth McGovern chats Downton dressing
Elizabeth McGovern enjoys the "boyish" style of Downton Abbey.
The 53-year-old actress stars in the popular period drama as Cora Crawley, onscreen mother to Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael. All three women wear beautiful costumes in the show, which have changed in different seasons as the programme moves forward in time. The next series will be its sixth but Elizabeth holds the pieces from the last close to her heart.
"My favourite era, that is really my taste, is the season five clothes. We’ve got the most brilliant costume designer working on the show, and it just looks so great," she smiled to elle.com. "I like that 20s style: everything’s moving, the hair’s getting shorter. I love the look, that low waistline, the long, straight line, the boyish thing that they go for. The clothes this season have such a sense of richness and colour."
Away from the camera Elizabeth is a big fan of fashion too. She has previously sat front row at Mulberry's London Fashion Week show, joining the likes of Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Rebecca Hall.
Also in attendance was Elizabeth's co-star Joanne Froggatt, who plays ladies maid Anna Bates. She’s previously spoken about how the costumes on the show really help her embrace the feel of Downton Abbey.
"My wardrobe certainly helps me get into character. It's obviously very different from anything I would wear and when I put the black maids dress on I definitely feel like Anna, not Joanne," she explained.
