Elle Fanning dazzles in ballgown at Cannes Film Festival

Actress Elle Fanning rocked the red carpet at Cannes in a glamorous gown by Vivienne Westwood on Wednesday night (17May17).

Elle Fanning pulled out all the stops when she stepped out at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night (17May17).

The 19-year-old walked the red carpet at the opening night of the film gala on Wednesday night, where she wore a glamorous gown by Vivienne Westwood.

Elle's custom-made dress was made of white silk and had a draped bodice, while the train was embroidered with whimsical images of flowers, hearts and arrows, as well as Elle's name and the British designer's signature.

Thrilled to be wearing such a special outfit to the star-studded event, the actress and L'Oreal brand ambassador posted several images of her ensemble to her Instagram page.

"Opening Night of Cannes!!! I had the honor of walking the 70th annual red carpet as a #lorealista dressed in a mystical galactic creation of a gown!!!" she captioned one snap, adding, "Thank you from the bottom of my soul @viviennewestwoodofficial for making me the most incredible magical dress! AND FOR PAINTING ON THE BACK OF IT!!!!!! Customized with a special unicorn and my name...twice!"

Elle, whose new film The Beguiled will be premiering at the festival, wasn't the only star to make a sartorial statement. Jessica Chastain wore a strapless black gown from Alexander McQueen which featured flower and dove motifs across the bodice and velvet detailing around the skirt. The Miss Sloane actress, who is a member of the film festival's jury, complemented her look with Piaget jewellery.

Meanwhile, Robin Wright donned a studded black Saint Laurent dress which she matched with Chopard bling, Julianne Moore matched her signature red hair with a ruby Givenchy Haute Couture number, and Susan Sarandon epitomised Hollywood glamour in a forest green Alberta Ferretti gown with plunging neckline and a dramatic thigh-high slit.

Yet Naomie Harris was one of the only stars to sport some vibrant colour to the event. The British star wore a Gucci gown with pleated skirt which featured peach, pink, mint and yellow panels, as well as Swarovski jewellery.

But it seems the pink suede high heels Naomie wore were a bit too much, as she later posted a photo on Instagram of her walking barefoot back to her hotel.

"And that's a wrap on #cannes2017 for me! #atelierswarovski@swarovski Dress in hand, high heels off and walking the croisette back to my hotel!! Got to keep it real always!! Night, night peeps!!! #gucci," she captioned the image.
