Emma Stone’s Battle of the Sexes costumes explained
Emma Stone reteamed with her La La Land costumed designer Mary Zophres on Battle of the Sexes.
Emma Stone and costume designer Mary Zophres joked that some outfits for Battle of the Sexes were too much like the actress’ La La Land clothes.
Emma reteamed with Mary on the tennis drama, about the 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), not long after they worked together on Oscar-winning smash La La Land.
While the films vary vastly in terms of storyline and era, Mary found a few of the costumes were reminiscent of Mia’s wardrobe, the character Emma, 28, played in La La Land.
"(Emma’s) body changed. She put on weight in the form of muscle, whereas her body in La La Land was slim and graceful," Mary told The Hollywood Reporter of working on The Battle of the Sexes. "That was kind of interesting. In our first fitting, we joked, 'That looks too much like Mia. Take that off.'"
Battle of the Sexes hits cinemas later this year (17). Mary thoroughly researched what tennis ace Billie was wearing at the time, but decided against directly copying any of her courtside clothes; all except one distinct white dress.
"There's a lot of photographic research of Billie Jean King, so it was a great jumping-off point. We didn't duplicate any outfits, per se, but there's an overall feeling of how she looks. She's actually quite stylish," Mary shared.
"The only thing we replicated was the Battle of the Sexes dress, the dress that she actually wore to that event."
Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming and Andrea Riseborough also star in the sports biography.
