Emma Thompson's turban hair

Emma Thompson "hated" her hairstyle for her role in Saving Mr. Banks.

The British actress stars as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers alongside Tom Hanks' Walt Disney in the movie.

After avoiding playing older women in the past, Emma was shocked to see how old-fashioned her hairdo was on screen.

"I said no to [playing] Bradley Cooper's mother, which I was sorry about later because when I watched myself as P.L. Travers, I thought, 'F**king hell, I could have played his grandmother,'" she laughed to British magazine Style.

"[It was] more a kind of kink [than a perm]... My friends in LA said, 'You don't want to go out with that. Haven't you got some sort of turban?' Perhaps I'm vainer than I thought, because I hated it so much."

The 54-year-old actress is praised for her modesty and willingness to take on roles where she looks "f**king awful".

She is so relaxed about her appearance that she doesn't mind what people see her wearing.

"Pyjama bottoms with a jacket over them, and some slippers," she admitted when asked what the oddest outfit she has ever worn to the shops is. "I have many vile qualities, but vanity is not one of them."

One of the reasons Emma feels so comfortable not dressing up is because of her home environment. She has yet to move out of her family nest and still lives with her mother after her father passed away when she was 21.

"I do get to see amazing things, and then I just come back to a place that is so familiar, there is no effort required. I wander around wearing exactly the same things I wore when I was 16," she smiled.
