Emmy Rossum: I'm retro

Emmy Rossum's style has evolved thanks to a "retro sensibility" she has added to her look.
The Shameless actress has made some consistently elegant red carpet appearances over the past year, which have helped establish her as a style icon.
The 26-year-old star discussed her favourite fashion pieces and how she's mixed up her look throughout her career.
"I grew up in New York and I think for a long time my style was pretty gorky preppy New Yorker - mostly sticking to rich jewel tone colours and whites in simple silhouettes. As I travelled more, I've become more open to styles from around the world," Emmy told stylecaster.com. "I've kind of morphed into a new style that's still rooted in the New York sensibilities I grew up with, but now I'm very inspired by a bit of a retro sensibility. I'm more open to trying prints, neons and different shapes that I wouldn't have when I was younger. I really love all things retro, especially jewellery from the Edwardian and Deco periods. I also love vintage shopping - I was just in Palm Springs and I found the best pair of Chanel sneakers."
Classic labels such as Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren often feature in Emmy's fashion repertoire. The singer and star of upcoming movie Beautiful Creatures revealed these designers are responsible for some of her favourite red carpet looks, such as the stunning custom gold Donna Karan one-shoulder gown she wore to the Critics' Choice Television Awards last year.
"For starters, everything I've worn to the Met Balls (like the blue Kenneth Cole gown in 2010) and, of course, Ralph Lauren's designs which I wore for The Phantom of the Opera press tour [are my favourite red carpet moments]," Emmy gushed. "I also love Donna Karan, who I've worn numerous times."
Emmy is a creature of habit, and has three items in her wardrobe she would never part with. Each of these closet staples holds a special meaning for her, which is why she'll never let them go.
"I have a Ralph Lauren Ricky bag in red crocodile that he gave to me for my 18th birthday. It's insured - I'm scared to take it out of the house because I'm afraid I'll lose it or it will get stolen. I have a DKNY sweater with holes in the sleeves that my mom always tries to throw out when she visits, but I wear it anyway," she explained. "Also, a pair of Roger Vivier shoes - they're custom sandals made to match the colour of my Ralph Lauren dress which I wore to the Oscars in 2005."
