Fashion gets comfy

If the thought of putting on a metallic mini teamed with a tight biker jacket and sky-high over-the-knee boots doesn't appeal, it's time to try something more comfy. This season designers have gone wild for coats inspired by dressing gowns, which are as easy to wear as they sound.

They key thing to remember is that while the trend borrows heavily from your piece of favourite towelling nightwear, it doesn't mean you can wear your old version and call it high fashion.

This month's dressing gown coats and cool and glamorous and come in an array of fabrics.

Haider Ackermann sent leather version of the coat down the runway. They came down to the models' shins and did up with a knotted belt around the middle. The sharp tailoring was paired with sharp styling - models had quaffed hair and sleeves were pushed back to the elbow, meaning the look was anything but frumpy.

Hermès opted for loose-fitting black versions, while Michael Kors went all out with a gold metallic version. Ralph Lauren showed an opulent version trimmed with fluffy fabric.

If you want to give this trend a go, shop around. It's vital to get the right fit, as anything too big will add bulk. It might even be worth going for a size smaller than usual to ensure you don't get swamped.

The look works with almost any outfit, but it's best to keep things streamlined underneath. So switch palazzo pants for skinny cigarette versions, and opt for a slim-fitting jumper rather than a chunky knit. Add lashing of jewellery, be it earrings, bracelets or necklaces and your look is complete.
