Freida Pinto: I need to dial back make-up

Freida Pinto

Freida Pinto "loves" wearing colourful cosmetics.

The 29-year-old actress, who has starred in hit films Slumdog Millionaire and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is known for her flawless complexion.

She loves to experiment with beauty products but has to be careful with how much she puts on.

"I was brought up in India so I love colour but if I carry too much make-up with me now I tend to go overboard so I like to keep things simple. I'm always late so I need the easiest make-up to put on," she explained to British newspaper The Telegraph.

"Kohl [eyeliner] and mascara are my 'musts', but black kohl can look too dense. I use dark brown because then I can smudge it with my fingers to create a smoky eye. I can even fill in my eyebrows with it."

When she was a child Freida would watch her mother apply things to her face. She believes these observations are what got her into beauty in the first place.

"I like collecting make-up more than using it. I buy something because I love it but then think, 'When am I ever going to use this?'" she smiled.

"I think it's because, growing up, I loved make-up - that's the girl in me. Every time I saw my mom put on make-up I'd ask her, 'Can I use some too?' And she would say no, I was too little."

Rather than opting for a professional to create a look for her, Freida is keen to apply cosmetics herself. This enables her to get everything just right.

"I really enjoy doing my own make-up: I know whether I want my brows a little darker, or my eyeliner slightly more flicked out," she added. "At the end of the day, no one understands your face as much as you do."
