Gabrielle Union: All hail castor oil

Gabrielle Union has revealed the secret to her luscious locks.

The 42-year-old likes trying new things in the world of beauty, particularly if they are recommended by friends. While she was shooting her TV show Being Mary Jane, she and her co-stars came across the use of castor oil in hair, so she decided to give it a shot.

“We were Googling hair-growth treatments and it kept coming up, so we got some. It’s thick. It’s thick as hell. We apply it with a little brush, and I think it works,” she told The Cut.

“Wherever you think it may help around your scalp. You have to use it sparingly because it’s thick and it will make your hair look like a limp rag. Check out the before and after pictures online. It works.”

2014 has been the year of coconut oil, with many people swearing by it. It’s been lauded for its health properties when used in cooking, with some people also using it as a skin moisturiser or a deep conditioning hair treatment.

For Gabrielle, it doesn’t match up to her beloved castor oil.

“I used [coconut oil] to cook recently. But other than that… Actually, when I was on my honeymoon in the Maldives, the masseuse told me to use coconut oil for my hair… I thought it was a little heavy,” she said, referring to her marriage to basketball star Dwyane Wade in August. “I haven’t used it since.”
