Inside Caitlyn’s old Hollywood Versace look
Donatella Versace was “over the moon” when she learned Caitlyn Jenner wanted her to design the reality TV star’s gown for the ESPY Awards.
The 65-year-old’s attendance at the sporting awards ceremony was her first official TV appearance since coming out as transgender.
She donned a stunning floor-length white Atelier Versace gown to the event and her stylist Jen Rade, who also worked with Angelina Jolie in the past, has spoken about Caitlyn’s attire inspiration for the night.
"The look that Caitlyn was going for was definitely old Hollywood glamour -- something very chic, classic and sophisticated," Jen explained to Entertainment Tonight, noting late actress Lauren Bacall was the star’s main muse.
The celebrity stylist also revealed there were 10 swatches of custom ivory-coloured dyed fabric to choose from which were provided by Donatella Versace, who designed Caitlyn’s couture gown under the Atelier Versace imprint.
When Donatella learned she was selected to create Caitlyn’s dress, she was elated.
"Donatella was over the moon," Jen detailed. "That would be an understatement. She was so honoured. She was so excited. It didn't even take a half of a second and they were like, 'Yes! Yes! Yes! We're in! Yes!'"
The final gown was a combination of two previous designs, the top of one gown sketch and the bottom portion of another illustration, which were sent to Caitlyn by Donatella.
Caitlyn only selected one outfit for the night, as she wasn’t interested in changing clothes.
"There was no other option," Jen said. "No backup. No other gown. No other version of the gown. Just the gown."
Caitlyn received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the event and during her acceptance speech the star asked folks to “be kind” about how she looked because she was “new at this” whole glamorous red carpet thing.
But Jen claims her client was a natural.
"Even if she was really nervous, she was just enjoying it," Jen revealed. "I feel like she was really taking it all in, enjoying getting her hair done, enjoying the makeup, the process. She was super excited.”
