Janelle Monáe bans brights

Janelle Monáe will never branch out from the monochrome style she is known for.

The 27-year-old singer takes her public image incredibly seriously and wants to be instantly recognisable. That means there are certain outfits and hues she will never even consider, no matter how much people try to persuade her otherwise.

"There's no way I could be convinced to wear colour. From oxford shirts to custom saddle shoes, everything you see is black and white. It's definitely my armour and makes me feel more in control - like a soldier - when I have it on," she told the October edition of UK Marie Claire magazine.

Janelle hopes her music and style encourages her fans to embrace their true selves.

Although she is adamant about going for a monochrome look, she mixes things up in other ways.

"Fans come to the concerts paying homage, fully immersing themselves in the experience," she explained. "My message has always been: be in control of your body, be in control of your ideas and do what you want to do. I'm wearing my hair down for the first time in the Dance Apocalyptic video. It's about the end of the world, so extreme things happen."

Last year, Janelle was unveiled as a spokeswoman for CoverGirl. She used the experience to spread her message that girls should feel empowered and not worry if their face doesn't fit the Hollywood mould.

The singer also spoke about her beauty heroes, many of who go for a less-is-more approach.

"Growing up and trying to find myself as a woman and experimenting with make-up, I'd go buy magazines. I'd see Tyra Banks and I'd think, Wow, she's beautiful," Janelle continued. "It never looked like she had on too much make-up. There was just something clean and classic about her face."
