Singer Janelle Monáe thinks fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is a “visionary”.

(Cover) - EN Star Style - Musician Janelle Monáe is inspired by Karl Lagerfeld because he creates the kind of “retro-futuristic” fashion she likes to wear.

The 29-year-old singer was among the guests at Karl’s Spring/Summer 16 Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday (06Oct15). The set was an airport emblazoned with the fashion house’s logos, with various updated versions of the label’s classic tweed jacket coming down the runway.

“Karl Lagerfeld is a visionary,” Janelle beamed to elle.com. “He's been a big supporter of me and my music, and was one of the first designers to invite me to a show. He's a true artist and I'm just inspired by him as a person. (Today's show) was futuristic. It was classic. It was a vision that I saw. I felt like he was in my head because I'm always constantly speaking about science fiction and the future. It was retro-futuristic which is something I identify with as a style of dress.”

Janelle is renowned for dressing in monochrome and usually wearing trouser suits. That doesn’t mean it’s easy for her to find her dream pieces though – in fact she often creates them herself.

This is one of the reasons why she’s been a front row regular during this show season, attending the likes of Valentino, Stella McCartney, Sonia Rykiel, Akris and John Galliano.

The star used the opportunity to come up with her own ideas, as she sees fashion design as an extension of her own career.

“I've been so inspired to be even more creative and empowered as an artist, and as a designer,” she said. “I design my clothes, my tuxedos. When I'm looking through other designers' lines, I'm always looking for myself - for something that feels like me. It's just been inspiring to see the production, to experience them getting ready - it's like making an album, but with models.”
