Jess Simpson: Weight shouldn't be an issue
Jessica Simpson prefers to "enjoy life" rather than obsess about her figure.
The 33-year-old star has a hugely successful fashion business which is said to rake in over $1 billion annually. She was invited to talk about her career in style at the Forbes Women’s Summit in Manhattan on Thursday, with Jessica explaining her philosophy.
“I feel like we all need to enjoy life,” she explained. ‘If I’m five pounds heavier or 50 pounds heavier or five pounds lighter, I don’t think that should define who you are.”
Jessica has famously battled her weight, with much of it playing out in the public eye. She is mother to two-year-old Maxwell and ten-month-old Ace, with her pregnancy figure the subject of much scrutiny both times. When she was expecting Maxwell, Jessica made no secret of the fact she treated herself to any food she wanted and piled on around 50lbs.
She used Weight Watchers to slim down after welcoming both kids and is now proud to say she "fluctuates" like most women. In fact, the star believes it's her experiences with her weight which has helped boost her fashion business.
"I think my brand has surpassed my name and my celebrity,” she explained. “[I] understands consumers [because I've been] every size.”
The blonde star admitted being faced with so much speculation about her body has been hard though. She was more careful about her weight gain when pregnant with her son Ace and even though she is now slimmed down again, it's hard to forget some of the mean things which have been said about her appearance.
"If I took what people say about me or what sells magazines and all that to heart, I would not be sitting up here and talking to you and all of these people. I look at brushing that stuff off,” she said. “That’s not to say it didn’t make me cry. I try not to look at it and listen to it.”
